k'road song
Karangahape Road, Auckland - it had a reputation as being a bit seedy, a bit on the dark side, the street where the sex shops are located. Lately though it has been cleaned up a bit and gentrified so has lost some of its edge. It is still the main place to go for a night out clubbing in the city. Regardless of all that it has a lot of associations for me and at one stage my family all lived there (as the song says). We had a wonderful view of the Harbour from the K Road ridge. I had this great guitar riff that sounded urban and I worked it into a song quite easily, the words were refined over a week or so to include all the visual markers of the street, the Vegas Girl, George Courts, the cemetery and the characters on the street. I cannot deny what Karanagahape used to be and in no way would I sanitise it just to make it more acceptable to the middle of the road listeners.
Melodica played by Takashi Kawabata, thank you Takashi!
Thank you to Keith Pine for the use of the Geddes Dental Jingle.
